This Week in the Studio
I’m very happy to report that the camping trip was actually very pleasant! The weather was exceptionally nice–mostly cool and clear with a nice breeze. Saturday afternoon was miserably hot, but my son got a camping hammock out for me and set it up in the shade, and I was able to relax a bit and let the worst of the heat pass.
The nights felt absolutely divine. The stars were bright and gorgeous, and I was able to chat with a few familiar constellations I used to know from my amateur stargazing days. Most of them are doing great! Orion has a sore shoulder (betelgeuse is getting old) . Of course I introduced them to my family, too.
The tent I was in had one whole side and the top open to the sky by way of a thin mesh. Bugs couldn’t get in, but the breeze and the stars could. So I literally slept under the stars. It was just divine…literally. The Lord was much in my thoughts as I expressed my gratitude for such glory, peace, and comfort.
Here are a few photos.
I’ve been fascinated by the work of David Zinn for some time now, and so my granddaughter and I had a go at street chalk painting.
“Heart” Instruments
I have not done a lot of blogging on the other subject that is close to my heart: music! I am, after all, and chronologically first, a music teacher.
My student K, a spunky 9 year old, takes voice lessons with me. After a few months of enjoying voice, she decided to add ukulele to her skills. Unknown to me and her mother, she lost interest quickly, but the plucky kid kept practicing even though playing hurt her fingers. Finally she admitted it to her mom, who contacted me. After negotiations, K is happily beginning piano lessons, and is so excited!
“Heart” instruments is the term I use for the instrument that you learn to play that really sparks a passion in you. It speaks for you. It sings your heart. You may play other instruments with skill and even enjoyment, but nothing says “you” like your heart instrument.
K is a singer. That’s her first heart instrument. But it’s starting to look like piano speaks another part of her heart.
For me, piano, voice, flute and saxophone are heart instruments. Each one speaks a part of my heart that no other instrument can speak. I’ve played many, many other instruments, including drums, but none of them speak for me. I can make them speak, but none of them speak for me.
I love to let students explore different instruments and find their “heart” instrument. And if it turns out that I don’t teach that instrument, I will help them find a teacher. Nothing beats the feeling of playing with passion, and that’s my goal with every student…to help them find and build that passion and skill so their voice can be heard. If you are interested in discovering yours, contact me below.
That’s why I always wish you the joy of seeing the music, listening for the colors, touching the magic and awakening the wonder and worship in your heart.
Until next week (did I mention ARTY PARTY???)
Godspeed,
