Camp of the Hills
You can’t tell me that dreams don’t come true. In the late fall of 2020, I found myself talking with KT and Alicen, two lovely young ladies on staff at Camp of the Hills . Camp of the Hills is a ministry dedicated to showing God’s love to our campers and making our camp experiences accessible and supportive of the needs of youth from low-income and vulnerable communities from all across Texas. The camp is in a beautiful setting with many lovely views, peaceful walking paths, and the potential for lovely wildflowers during the spring season.
Artist’s Retreat Dream
But they offer much more, and that’s where my story begins. I spoke with KT and Alicen about an idea I had for an artist’s plein air retreat. I literally had no idea what all that would require, but I soon discovered I was in good hands with these ladies: they knew everything needed to put on such a retreat. Not only that, but a retreat for artists, makers and creatives where they can connect in a more spiritual way with their creativity was something Alicen had dreamed of for years!
2021 saw
- 10 campers
- from all walks of life,
- a wide age span, and
- all levels of artistic experience
- in many different mediums.

The Best Part
The best part of the retreat were the devotionals we had each evening: led by KT or Alicen, these meetings pushed us to dig deeper into our “why” of making art. The next best thing? The camaraderie! Fellow artists all, we helped each other, learned from each other and pushed each other to try things we wouldn’t normally try. We made life-long friendships during that retreat.
Wash, Rinse…
So this year we are doing it again! We’ve broadened the description to all CREATIVES, because this is a great place for any type of artist or crafts-person to seek and find purpose and inspiration. We’ve tweaked the schedule so that it runs more smoothly, and we’ve added some activities and goodies that we think will enhance the experience even more.
